Annapolis & South River: Protecting Our Local Waters

The South River and surrounding Annapolis waters are the focus of critical environmental updates this month. The Arundel Rivers Federation is hosting its annual deep dive into the ecological status of our local waterways, providing residents with data on water quality and restoration efforts.

  • River Report Card (May 14): Join the South, West, and Rhode Riverkeepers at Homestead Gardens in Davidsonville (5:30 PM) for the official 2025 health assessment.

  • Dinner Under the Stars: A seasonal favorite returns to West Street in Annapolis, featuring live music from Michael Miller on May 14.

  • Maritime Performances: Rams Head On Stage features a heavy lineup this month, including legendary guitarist Al Di Meola (May 9) and Madeleine Peyroux (May 11).

Rock Hall: A Hub for Sailors and Shore-Lovers

Known as the "Pearl of the Chesapeake," Rock Hall is leaning into its musical and maritime roots this May. Whether you're interested in technical sailing events or local legends, the town's calendar is packed.

  • Rock Hall Triathlon (May 30-31): Note for mariners: the harbor will be closed to boat traffic from approximately 7:45 AM to 11:00 AM on both days to accommodate the swim portion of the race.

  • Bob Dylan 85th Birthday Tribute (May 21): The Mainstay hosts a special "Pub Nite" featuring 'Captain Mark and Friends' to celebrate the legend's milestone.

  • Pirates & Wenches Weekend Preview: Mark your calendars for August 7–9, 2026, as the town gears up for its massive annual family-friendly festival.

St. Michaels & Talbot County: Sailing into History

May marks the start of the primary sailing season in St. Michaels, with the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) and local charters offering immersive ways to experience the Miles River.

  • Joinery 101 at CBMM (May 2-3): A hands-on workshop for those interested in the technical side of traditional boat building and woodworking.

  • Eastern Shore Weekend (May 1-3): A celebration of local culture featuring regional food, arts, and maritime history.

Baltimore & The Northern Bay: Festivals and Fly-Ins

Further north, the activities shift toward a blend of quirky traditions and aviation history, perfect for those exploring the Upper Bay.

  • Kinetic Sculpture Race (May 2): Baltimore’s most eccentric race returned early this month, featuring amphibious human-powered works of art.

  • Chili Fiesta Fly-In (May 9): Head to the Massey Aerodrome for the 22nd annual gathering of aviation enthusiasts, featuring vintage aircraft and local chili.

  • Chestertown Tea Party Festival (May 22-24): A major Upper Bay event featuring a reenactment of the 1774 protest, complete with a parade and "tossing the tea" into the Chester River.
