Chesapeake Bay Swim -Volunteers Needed
The Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association (CBPBA) is looking for volunteers for the Chesapeake Bay Swim on June 14th.   They need 4 stroke jet skis and power boats of all sizes.

This is the 13th year that the CBPBA supports the March of Dimes in this event.  The CBPBA provides support to make sure the 650+ swimmers safely swim the 4.4 miles across the bay in between the spans.  Jet skis and kayaks are nearby to pick up any swimmers who need assistance and take them to other boats outside the bridge spans.  To make this happen  they need as many jet skis and power boats as possible!

High-Stakes Baltimore Key Bridge Civil Trial Postponed Indefinitely Following Settlements

  • Summary: A federal judge in Baltimore unexpectedly postponed the highly anticipated civil trial concerning the 2024 Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, which was slated to begin on June 1. The delay comes after a flurry of eleventh-hour settlements resolved a massive portion of the outstanding financial claims against the companies managing the container ship Dali.
  • Legal Shift: U.S. District Judge James K. Bredar delayed the proceedings indefinitely to assess legal arguments that could potentially conclude the litigation altogether without going to trial.
  • Prior Agreement: This follows a massive $2.25 billion settlement reached in April between the state of Maryland and the Singapore-based ship owners, though certain economic loss claims from the city of Baltimore remain on the table.
  • Criminal Case Pending: The pause on the civil front does not impact separate federal criminal charges carrying allegations of conspiracy and misconduct against the ship's operator.

Record-Breaking Water Clarity Spurring Exceptional Sight-Fishing in the Upper Bay

  • Summary: Regional maritime and fishing briefings for the first week of June highlight a rare phenomenon in the northern Chesapeake Bay: unprecedented, crystal-clear water conditions.  Charter captains operating around the Upper Bay's hard structures report seeing fish up to 10 feet down in the water column, creating extraordinary sight-fishing conditions but requiring boaters to adopt stealthier approaches.
  • Environmental Factors: Marine experts attribute the exceptional water clarity to a perfect storm of an unusually hard freeze last winter, below-average spring rainfall reducing sediment runoff, and accelerating filtration from local oyster populations.
  • Tactical Shifts: While the clear water makes it easier for fish to spot shallow draft hulls and become spooked, the topwater striped bass bite remains highly productive along high-current structures during low-light dawn and dusk windows.

High Fuel Costs Prompting East Coast Cruisers to Pivot to the Chesapeake Bay

  • Summary: As the summer boating season ramps up across the nation, rising marine fuel prices are heavily dictating travel itineraries for recreational cruisers.  Marina fuel stations along major coastal routes have reported notable spikes, driving a trend where long-distance boaters choose to stay and cruise within the Chesapeake Bay rather than taking costly treks further north to New England or Canada.
  • Price Shifts: Marina diesel prices at major hubs climbing toward the $7.00–$8.00 per gallon range have significantly impacted seasonal budgets, making the vast, sheltered cruising grounds of the Bay a primary summer destination.
